Holiday Gifts and Long-term Planning

Once again, the holiday season is upon us. For many families, however, the events of the past year have resulted in a shift in values and priorities. As we’re contemplating gifts for those we hold dear, we may wonder what could make their lives easier or enhance their comfort or well-being. Especially with older family members, we may wonder what we can give them or what we can do to improve their quality of life.

This family-focused time presents an ideal opportunity to look toward the future honestly and realistically and to talk with family members about their future wishes concerning long-term care.

For instance, consider your own future. Have you done everything possible to ensure that you will be able to sustain yourself financially during retirement, thus avoiding the need to depend on your children? Also consider your parents. Have you done everything possible to ensure that, as they age, they will have access to and options for optimal health care? If you have not yet discussed future care for you and your loved ones, there’s no time like the present.

Long-term care needs to be addressed with loved ones sooner rather than later. While nobody wants to think about future health problems, avoiding the possibility doesn’t make it go away. By discussing this issue with your loved ones, understanding and reassurance can replace fear and anxiety. By communicating openly and honestly, you can exchange denial for a practical plan that will meet the needs of all involved.

None of us know what the future holds. However, planning today for an uncertain tomorrow may help preserve family assets, provide options for care, and perhaps most importantly, bring you and your loved ones peace of mind. Before this year’s holiday season is over, be sure to be in contact with us regarding your family’s long-term planning concerns
